In the presentation of DELTA VALUES in spring we unveiled our first project: supporting the Catalan climber Oscar Cadiach in his challenge of reaching the summit of the Broad Peak, located between China and Pakistan, the only one over 8,000 meters that was missing on his extensive career.

 

 

On June 16 the Tarragona mountaineer traveled to Pakistan in search of his 14th eight-thousand, along with a group of 36 friends and acquaintances. In case he managed, he would become the most veteran 14th eight-thousander ever. Eventually, it was not possible and Oscar's first attempt at reaching the summit of Broad Peak (8,051 m) ended when he had reached 8.025m, from where he turned around for security reasons and because of the worsening of weather conditions.

 

The official statement of the Broad Peak Expedition explains that in the attempt to reach the summit, the doctor Anna Pujol, accompanying Cadiach, suffered a second-degree frostbite on her toes of both feet and had to be evacuated from the base camp by helicopter. The remaining members are in perfect health and will continue with the plan to be back in Barcelona on August 6.

 

Cadiach could not complete an adventure that began 30 years ago, when in 1984 he made his first eight-thousand: the Nanga Parbat. The mountaineer was the first Catalan to climb the Everest, in the historic ascent in August 1985, and would have become the 16th climber in the world that has completed the 14 eight-thousand without using supplemental oxygen.
